First Of All

  Welcome to the first of (hopefully) many posts following my bakery adventures and my progress toward opening my own bakery. Most of my baking focuses on cupcakes, with the occasional foray into other tasty things.


   What better time to start a blog than after a weekend of decorating cupcakes for various family events. My brother graduated from college, my grandparents 62nd wedding anniversary, my grandmother's birthday, my sister-in-laws baby shower and, of course, Mothers Day.


   I used the same basic Bonnie Butter Cupcake and Vanilla butter-cream frosting (Wilton's recipe) for each event but made every effort to make the decorations personal and creative. I have been using YouTube videos to teach myself new techniques and get ideas.

Bonnie Butter Cupcakes

  Makes approx. 24 cupcakes


  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy.

Add the eggs and vanilla and beat on high for about 2 minutes.

Mix all dry ingredients in a separate bowl.

Add the dry ingredients to the butter/sugar mixture, alternating with the whole milk.

Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full and bake 14-17 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. (Be very          careful not to over-bake!)

Vanilla Butter-cream

  Makes approx 2 1/4 cups frosting


  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 cups confectioner's sugar (powdered sugar) 
  • 2-3 Tbsp milk

Cream together butter, shortening, vanilla extract and two Tbsp of milk. 

Add the sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. 

Add additional milk until proper consistency.                                                   

    For the graduation cupcakes, I chose to do two different decorations: mini graduation hats and a few hot air balloons, because my brothers internship while in school was a part of the NASA Borealis program.

   The hats are made of peanut butter cups, topped with Ghirardelli Salted Caramel Squares 

and a tassel of homemade marshmallow fondant. I glued them together with a small amount of chocolate melting candies.

For the anniversary/Grandmothers birthday cupcakes, I chose to do some two-toned roses, simple and elegant for the best grandparents ever.

    Next up was Mothers Day. Not being a mother myself but knowing some of the best mothers in the world, it needed to be something amazing. I found this awesome idea on Pinterest , so I can't take complete credit. The only thing better than beautiful flowers, is beautiful flowers you can eat! Next time I will most likely use different colors but, overall, I am pretty proud of these. The petals are more of that tasty marshmallow fondant.


   Saving the best for last: the baby shower. By far my favorite display to date, it was also the most time consuming. Using a mash-up of internet ideas and my own creativity, I created the most delicious bubble bath ever, using a variation of these gelatin bubbles and some rubber ducks.
